Serving the South West of England
Septic tanks are a crucial component of any property that doesn’t have a connection to a main drainage line. In rural sections of the UK, properties oftentimes aren’t connected to main sewer systems. In this case, the septic tank is a private sewage treatment plant that handles all wastewater from the property. It works by allowing the separation of solid wastes from liquids, processing each divergently.
The process within the septic tank is essentially a mini environmental system at work. Wastewater flows into the tank and solid waste sinks to the bottom, forming sludge. The lighter waste, such as oils and grease, floats to the top forming a layer known as scum. In-between these layers is the effluent, a liquid that can, after treatment, be safely discharged into the environment.
Proper maintenance of septic tanks is essential. Over time, the sludge and scum can build up and cause issues in the septic system and the wider environment. Regular emptying by a professional drainage company is advisable. It is also crucial not to overload the system with too much water or introduce harmful chemicals, which can kill the bacteria that make this process possible. Septic tanks not only serve an important function for properties, they also serve a vital role in the protection of our environment.
